Develope a Palate

Develope a Palate
Daily intake of the Word nourishes the Spirit. Jeremiah's Menu is an exercise in recognizing God's Word made flesh in and around me. Eating the Word in a way that supplies the spiritual nutrients needed to grow. The Menu is offered with the hope of inspiring you to taste and see that the Lord is good. Bon Appetite!

Quote Du Jour

Quote du Jour
Christians may differ on a variety of points, but they have all one spiritual appetite; and if we cannot all feel alike, we can all feed alike on the bread of life sent down from heaven. At the table of fellowship with Jesus we are one bread and one cup. As the loving cup goes round we pledge one another heartily therein. Get nearer to Jesus, and you will find yourself linked more and more in spirit to all who are like yourself, supported by the same heavenly manna. ---Charles Spurgeon, Morning and Evening

the skies proclaim...

The heavens declare the glory of God...
Psalm 19:1 ESV

The storm clouds blowing in...
overshadowing... awesome... powerful...
nothing can stop them...

And I think of the skies... declaring His glory...
Overshadowing... Awesome... Powerful...
blowing in where He wills...

Who is the King of glory? The Lord Almighty ---
he is the King of glory.
Psalm 24:10 ESV

The Journey Readings: Week 122... and... when awesome is uncomfortable...

We have a new organist for Sunday morning worship...
this was his first week... he'll be with us through the summer...
a newly graduated college student...

His opening prelude... was... something...
very loud...
very austere...
very threatening...
like the soundtrack of an old black and white horror movie...

It's not what I expected...
the intense mood music...
not the norm in worship...

Frankly... it made me uncomfortable...
but as I sat down to write this week's entry for The Journey...
that's what came to mind...

Finishing up the book of Jeremiah...
reveals an awesome God...
who makes many in the church today... well... just that...
uncomfortable...

An awesome God... who destroys hard-hearted unbelievers... rebels... who refuse to repent... and drags their little ones away...

"...Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan
against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her,
and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me?
Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?
Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Babylon,
and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans:
Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away;
surely there fold shall be appalled at their fate.
At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble,
and her cry shall be heard among the nations."
Jeremiah 50:44:-46 ESV

An awesome God... who when He speaks... stirs up awesome storms...

"It is he who made the earth by his power, who established
the world by his wisdom and by his understanding stretched
out the heavens. When he utters his voice there is a tumult
of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from
the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain
and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses. ..."
Jeremiah 51:15-16 ESV

An awesome God... who leaves the disobedient king of His people... in the hands of the king rebel...

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook
Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him.
Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon
at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him.
The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes,
and also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at Riblah.
He put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him in chains,
and the king of Babylon took him to Babylon, and put him in prison
till the day of his death.
Jeremiah 52:8-11 ESV

He is God... no one... can question His judgments... no matter how hard they seem...

This awesome God of vengeance and power... makes us uncomfortable... like severe organ music in Sunday morning worship...

But this is God...
the real God...
the One revealed in His Word...

I appreciate the stark music now... though I didn't until this moment...
thinking back on Jeremiah... who he revealed God to be...
One who keeps His Word... holds true to His promises... whose vengeance is just... who cannot be mocked...

The revelation of His awesome power and nature...
makes His love all the more awesome...
His salvation... incredible...

Open your heart to who He really is...
to who He says He is...
dare to begin... The Journey...

awe-full... anger...

There is an aspect of God's character that is awe-full...
one we should literally be full of awe over...

The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Psalm 103:8 ESV

He is... slow to anger...

We can too easily deceive ourselves... because He is slow to anger...

We can continue on a path of sin... with no immediate consequences...

Everything seems to be going along just fine...
there may have been a warning... or two...
friends giving wisdom you brush off...
maybe a twinge of guilt...
but you find your actions easy to justify...

God loves me... He forgives me...

Yes... He does love you...
He will forgive...
If you repent...

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.
1John 1:9 ESV

His lack of immediate response to sin...
His patience...
His mercy...
His grace...
when we don't receive it properly... reverently...
may let us go deep down into a pit of destruction...

Just like the prodigal son...
or the kings of His chosen people...
and the nation of Israel...

For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel,
"In returning and rest you shall be saved;
in quietness and trust shall be your strength."
But you were unwilling, and said, "No!..."
...therefore you shall flee away... your pursuers shall be swift.
A thousand shall flee at the threat of one;
at the threat of five you shall flee, till you are left
like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,
like a signal on a hill.
Isaiah 30:15-17 ESV

A lack of understanding... of His slowness of anger...
can lead us to being pursued by the enemy...
till we are like a lone flag on the top of a hill...
a target... all alone... the consequences fearful... and grievous...

Stand in awe of His mercy... and grace...
or better yet...
bow low before Him... as One who is slow to anger...

Do not deceive yourself...
your sin is known...
it will have its effect...

Return to Him...
Rest in His way...
Know salvation...

wondering at His ways...

For those who trust Him... step out in faith... follow the leading of the Spirit... wherever He blows... God makes the way...

In my own life... He led me to be prepared... for something I didn't know was coming... but He knew... and as I obeyed... not knowing why... He made the way for me to handle what came... a health issue requiring a radical lifestyle change...

I see it in the life of a friend... stepping out deeper in her relationship with Him... trusting Him in obedience... He makes the way... provides what's needed... as He expands the influence of ministry in her life...

And in the life of a loved one... she too... stepping out into unknown waters... just because she hears Him calling... and yes... with each step of faith... He is providing the way...

When we embrace Him... understand our lack of vision when it comes to the future... and trust Him... obey Him... He will prepare the way for what is ahead... He knows...

And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know,
in paths that they have not known I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light,
the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them.
Isaiah 42:16 ESV

This life is about getting to know Him by faith... because that's what pleases Him...

... without faith it is impossible to please him,
for whoever would draw near to God must believe
that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV

...and blesses us...

Then Jesus told [Thomas],
"Because you have seen me, you have believed;
blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
John 20:27

Yes... this evening... I'm wondering... in awe and amazement and joy... at His ways...

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.
Blessed be his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory!
Amen and Amen!
Psalm 72:18-19 ESV

remembering... His awesome deeds...

Sitting on the porch... in the warmth of the setting sun... preparing for the coming morning's Bible study...
Tell about a time God showed up and did something surprising and unexpected in a seemingly hopeless situation...
--- The Story Participant's Guide
And I did... through my pen... in my journal... recorded an awesome deed... a miracle that overwhelms... fills my heart with awe struck faith... more now than at the time...

At the time... too stunned to fully appreciate... feeling more like those disciples on the mountain... just before the Ascension... the ones who doubted...

But now... at a distance... it astonishes... encourages... reignites a war-weary faith...

By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness,
O God of our salvation,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas...
Psalm 65:5 ESV

What about you...? Do you need to remember... His awesome deeds in your life...?

Ask Him to remind you... where He has worked wonders for you...

We often forget... way too fast... in the heat of the most current battle...

Allow Him... to remind... encourage... refresh...

He is awesome indeed...!

too much...

Some days... He's just too much... for me...

Too gracious... to this broken mess...

Too generous... with insights into Himself...

Too many for me to grab... capture... secure...

Too much... for me to absorb...
understand...
know...

My spirit says... There's not enough time to get to know You... not enough days... for me to know You the way I want...

He replies... You have all eternity...

And the psalmist... echoes in my heart...

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me...
Psalm 139:6 ESV

Yes... Lord... You are... too wonderful... to... me...

Have you seen the wonder... of His too much... today...?
